Between June and October folk from all over Australia travel to places like the Blue Mountains in NSW, the ACT and WA's South West region in pursuit of black Perigord truffles, prized for their intense, earthy taste.
Just be sure to pack your woolies because truffles are a delicacy that grows best in winter, when frosts intensify their flavours.

In NSW, you can join a truffle hunt at Lowes Mount Truffiere in Oberon, south of Bathurst, where specially trained dogs sniff out truffles buried under oak and hazelnut trees.
After the hunt, savour a tasting platter and discover how foods rich in natural fats (think butter, cream, eggs) unlock the truffles' flavours.
You can also treat yourself to a selection of truffled products, such as truffle honey and truffle salt, to enjoy at home
Time your visit to coincide with the Oberon Community and Farmers Market, held on the first Saturday of each month, to stock up on more locally grown produce as well as handmade arts and crafts.

Not far away in Orange, visit Borrodell Estate to discover the pioneer of Australia's truffle industry.

Around Canberra, join truffle hunts at Blue Frog Truffles in Sutton or Turalla Truffles on the outskirts, then explore Bungendore's historic village and enjoy a pub lunch at the Carrington Inn. Stay at the Old Stone House for a historic experience.
In the Southern Highlands, learn about truffle harvesting, washing and grading at Robertson Truffles and how it became one of the first operating truffle farms in Australia.
Enjoy gourmet local produce at the Robertson Cheese Factory and stay at Redleaf Carriages for a unique experience.
Another option is a visit to the Snowy Mountains for truffle hunts at Macenmist Black Truffles and Wine in in Bredbo, followed by tastings and lunches. It's the skiing season, so why not combine the two?
If the coast is more your style, head to Gulaga Gold, a truffle farm between Cobargo and Tilba, and go fetch some truffles with the dogs.

In WA, truffles have been growing near the towns of Manjimup and Pemberton in WA's South West for years, producing 70 per cent of Australia's truffle supply.
Time your visit to include Truffle Kerfuffle, which returns to Manjimup in the South West from June 28-30.
Visitors to the event can go truffle hunting, taste their way through the festival village, meet farmers and growers, discover local wine and produce, and indulge in truffle-laden experiences with top chefs.
Truffle hunts are also available at Australian Truffle Traders and Truffle Hill through to August.
Not to be outdone, the nearby Margaret River region - best known for its superb wines - has also jumped aboard the truffle wagon.
Truffle Farm is a foodie-lovers' adventure where visitors can follow the farm's friendly Labrador truffle dogs Alby and Taz as they lead the way through rows of oak and hazel trees in search of the black gold.
The farm is family owned and operated, using farming techniques with minimal intervention to produce black truffles.
Its owners have partnered with Go in Style and Forage Safaris to include the farm's truffle-hunting experiences in the tour itineraries in 2024.
Go In Style is offering Margaret River Truffle Tours in June, July and August - with one- or two-hour experiences available with truffle hunting and the opportunity to taste truffle and the range of truffle-infused products.
The two-hour experience also includes premium tastings, such as truffle on soup, pate and pizza.
Forage Safaris is offering a full-day food, farm and wine tour, featuring truffle hunting during the 2024 truffle season.
