But running a household can sometimes become challenging and seeking out in-home care for support can be perceived as losing that independence.
According to the chief executive officer of service provider Myvista Home Care, Irene Mooney, all such care does is provide the support needed to conquer these challenges independently.
She said as we age, it's natural for many people to reflect on how they can make positive changes in our lives but often overlook home care, and believes the topic is often misunderstood.
"Every individual has unique needs, and we provide personalised care that promotes independence, comfort, and well-being," Ms Mooney told The Senior.
She said services - like those offered by the Perth-based company - were tailored to support individuals in their daily lives, allowing them to maintain control over their routines and decisions so they can age with confidence and stay at home for longer.
Meantime, according to the government's national website My Aged Care, what help at home, or in-home care, may look like will differ from person to person.

This may include someone popping over once or twice a week to help with shopping and cooking, getting medications, cleaning, gardening, to more in depth care like receiving personal care to bathe, dress, and getting in and out of bed.
It may also mean adjusting your house so that it's easier and safer for you to move around in, such as installing access ramps or handrails in the shower.
"Getting some help at home can enable you to continue to live independently in your own home for as long as possible," the website states.
It can also help stave off isolation as friends and partners pass away, plus any physical challenges.
Ms Mooney said service professionals "are not just assistants, they are companions offering a friendly face and ... helping hands".
