Leading eye charity The Fred Hollows Foundation is encouraging people to leave bequests in their wills in the lead up to Include a Charity Week (September 2-8).

Although many Australians donate to charity, less than 8 per cent leave gifts in their wills.
Bequests have been incredibly important to the charity, currently accounting for about 30 per cent of its public donations. Last year the foundation was able to train more than 36,000 health workers and surgeons thanks to legacy donations.

Head of legacy giving Nadia Aden said every contribution had a significant impact.
"Fred Hollows' legacy was setting up The Foundation," Ms Aden said.
"People who share his values can support his vision by creating their own legacy and leave a gift in their will to make an impact for generations to come."
Last year the foundation launched innovative healthy ageing projects in Vietnam, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda to improve access to eye care services for older people.
